about

Dear friends!
The ensemble of orthogonal music The Fathers of Good Sounds, and the musicologist Alexander Nevsky, present the first part of a multiple-volume musical-mythological study of the works of Anatoly Andreyev from the Pushkin Hills district, Pskov region, a brilliant composer, our compatriot and contemporary.
Comparatively unknown by the general public, Andreyev is one of the key figures in the academic underground scene of Opochka, Novorzhev, and Pushkinskiye Gory. His musical works always attract careful attention and are warmly received by musicians and critics at home and abroad.
Any review of Andreyev's work would have to acknowledge the formative influence of his lover, Anna Petrovna Khernova, on Andreyev’s development as a composer. Andreev's only love, Khernova is considered to be one of the most remarkable dames of the Pushkin Hills district. In recent years, her capacity of acting with utmost resolve, deep erudition and exquisite taste helped Khernova become one of the noted feminist leaders of the South of the Pskov region. Looking back into the history of this truly creative sexual partnership, we can see Andreyev's legacy in a new light. Anna Petrovna maintains the official list of Andreyev's works and is currently preparing his manuscripts for publication.
Anatoly Andreyev was born in the Issa village of the Pushkin Hills district, Pskov region, to a peasant family. Having completed the local eight-year basic school with some difficulty, the would-be composer took a job as a tractor operator at the local sovkhoz. The music Andreyev composed during this early, youthful period of his creative development can be described as a combination of the unexpected, a taste for experimentation, and the loving attention to the musical motives of his homeland. Some of his most popular works belonging to this period include, inter alia, "Variations on 'The Wind Was Blowing from the Sea, Bringing Trouble' for the choir of farting boys" and the suite "The Mother of Ours" for a tractor, an ocarina, and a milkmaid, as well the "Rondo for Three Drills and a Vacuum Cleaner". Unfortunately, nowadays these early works are being performed very rarely and none of them has ever been recorded.
Andreyev's mature works which we are delighted to present hereby, fully demonstrate his creative talent. We must also add that selecting and recording these particular pieces was a rather difficult task, given the size, the depth, and the diversity of the composer's legacy. We nevertheless hope that this effort will continue and view this compilation of recordings as the first installment of a longer series. Instead of publishing Andreyev's works in chronological order, we have decided to limit our initial selection to those pieces that are best suitable for an introduction into Andreyev's musical oeuvre, that is, the ones most tolerant to an untrained ear.

From the ancient times, the ensemble The Fathers of the Good Sounds has been bringing the Afro-Slavic rhythms of freak-n-roll to the humanity from the plains and hills of Pskov. The Fathers have gained some unhealthy popularity, largely because of their infamous performances in village clubs, port brothels, cafes at railway stations, charity marathons and local poetry contests. Brian Eno has famously characterised the Fathers’ music as “never heard”, and indeed this music makes cactuses bloom, children dance, and everyone else smile. The Fathers’ creative production contains elements of instrumental hooliganism, psychoanalytical melodicism and erotic adventures. The band’s goals are not so much aesthetic as they are conceptual and educational. The Fathers aim at bringing harmony to the world by popularizing the musical works of their fellow countryman and contemporary, the composer Anatoly Andreyev from the Pushkin Hills district of the Pskov region. In a close cooperation with the famous Pskov-based musicologist A. Nevsky, The Fathers Of Good Sounds conduct musical-mythological investigations of Andreyev’s life and work.

The famous ensemble "The Fathers of Good Sounds" (Russian "Отцы Хороших Звуков") since olden days brings to the mankind afro- slavic rhythms of freak-n-roll music from Pskov region.
