about

In Andreyev’s biography, there was also a period of enthusiasm about Celtic culture which captured his imagination for a long period of time. Our hero could often be seen reading William Butler Yates’ poetry on the dewy shores of the fast-moving currents of the Issa River, or in a moorland which abound in the forests of the realms of Pskov. During such days, the composer walked around naked, with his skin painted blue, following the ancient custom of Celtic warriors. There is a rumor, however, that once he used up all the paint, our composer replaced it with appropriate drinks capable of producing the same effect: making one’s skin appear intensely blue. Some people even say that some areas of Andreyev’s body have acquired their deep blue colors thanks to Anna Petrovna’s rolling pin.
In addition to reading poetry, Andreyev of course also conducted research on Celtic music. At this time a powerful thought crossed and completely captured his mind: a striking recognition that all Irish tunes, the endless number of songs of joy chanted by endless numbers of bards, all date back to the single root, the Great Jig, also known as the Chief Celt’s Dance. This idea finds an equally great expression in his Chief Celtic Song.
